How to Fund Commercial Solar in 2026: Tax Relief, Export Income & £0 Upfront

There's no single "solar grant" for most UK businesses — but between tax relief, export income and £0-upfront financing, a commercial solar system can pay for a large share of itself. Here's how the funding actually stacks up in 2026.

How commercial solar is funded in 2026

Unlike EV charging, commercial solar PV doesn't have a headline government grant. The good news: the funding picture is arguably better, because it combines tax relief, income from exported power, and financing that removes the upfront cost — and it's available to almost any UK business.

1. Tax relief: the biggest lever

Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) — the most valuable incentive for most businesses. It gives a 100% first-year tax deduction on the first £1 million of qualifying capital spend per year. Commercial solar PV counts as plant and machinery, so it qualifies.

A worked example: a business installing a £200,000 rooftop system can deduct the full cost via the AIA, saving roughly £50,000 in corporation tax in year one (at the 25% main rate) — before a single kWh of energy saving.

Above £1 million? Solar is classed as special-rate (integral features) expenditure, so it qualifies for the 50% first-year allowance — not the 100% "full expensing" that applies to main-rate plant. It's a common point of confusion worth getting right with your accountant.

2. Export income: the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

Whatever your solar generates but doesn't use, you can sell back to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee. Every large licensed supplier must offer an export tariff, and rates vary widely — from a few pence to over 30p/kWh — so the supplier you choose materially affects your return. For a business with significant roof space, SEG turns surplus generation into a revenue line.

3. £0 upfront: funded solar

If you'd rather not deploy capital at all, funded models (such as power-purchase agreements and lease structures) let you install solar with no upfront cost and pay through the energy savings. Energy Partners offers commercial solar with £0 upfront, nationwide deployment, and the design and financing handled for you.

Putting it together

For a typical commercial installation, the combination looks like:

  • Tax relief knocks ~25% off the effective cost in year one (via AIA)
  • Energy savings cut your grid bill from day one
  • SEG income monetises surplus generation
  • £0-upfront financing removes the capital barrier entirely

That's why commercial solar paybacks in the UK increasingly land well under 10 years, often far less when paired with battery storage.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a government grant for commercial solar panels? There's no single national capital grant for most businesses. The main support is tax relief (Annual Investment Allowance), Smart Export Guarantee income, and £0-upfront financing models.

Can a business claim 100% tax relief on solar? Most can, via the £1m Annual Investment Allowance. Above £1m, solar qualifies for the 50% first-year allowance (it's special-rate expenditure, so it doesn't get 100% full expensing). Confirm your position with your accountant.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee? A scheme requiring large electricity suppliers to pay you for solar electricity you export to the grid. Rates vary by supplier.

The bottom line

Commercial solar in 2026 isn't funded by a grant — it's funded by tax relief, export income and financing that, combined, can cover most of the cost. The right structure depends on your numbers; a site survey is the fastest way to see yours.
