HGV charging in 2026: the Megawatt Charging System is coming, and your depot needs to be ready

3.75 megawatts. 3,000 amps. 1,250 volts DC. That's the ceiling of the connector now being bolted onto UK truck stops — and one bay of it draws more power than most distribution depots' entire grid supply.

That's the design ceiling of the Megawatt Charging System — the connector now being bolted onto UK truck stops and depots. For scale: one MCS bay running flat out draws more power than most distribution warehouses' entire grid connection. A single pod at full spec pulls roughly what 1,200 UK homes do at peak.

For years, MCS was a conference slide. In 2026 it stopped being one. The standard is published, the first UK sites are live, the trucks that can use it are on sale, and £200 million of government money is building 25 more megawatt hubs. If you run HGVs — or you're a landlord with a yard full of someone else's — here's where it actually stands, and what it means for your site.

What MCS is, in one paragraph

The Megawatt Charging System is the heavy-duty successor to CCS: a distinct 7-pin, liquid-cooled connector rated to 3.75MW, against roughly a tenth of that for CCS. The interoperability standard, IEC TS 63379, was published in February 2026, which is the moment hardware makers stopped hedging — ABB, Kempower and Tesla all have MCS hardware in the field or in production, and the stations actually going in the ground today run 1MW to 1.68MW. The practical result: a 20% to 80% charge in 30 to 40 minutes for most electric HGVs. Daimler's eActros 600 does it in about 30 minutes; Volvo's FH Aero Electric in about 40. New trucks are shipping with both CCS and MCS inlets, so nobody is stranded on either side of the changeover.

Forty-five minutes is not a random number. It's a driver's statutory break. Megawatt charging exists so a loaded 42-tonner can come in, charge during the break the driver has to take anyway, and go straight back out. That's the whole business case, and it's why the money is moving now.

It's already in the ground in the UK

This isn't a Netherlands story you can file for later.

East Midlands Gateway, January. Kuehne+Nagel's site off the M1 opened the UK's first megawatt-scale eHGV hub on 15 January 2026 — six DC bays fed by a 1MW Voltempo HyperCharger pod, charging in under 30 minutes, funded through the Department for Transport's £200m Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID). It's the first of 25 planned megawatt-scale hubs and 35 depot charging locations under the eFreight 2030 programme.

Coatbridge, May. Russell Group switched on Scotland's first megawatt hub — two 720kW units and a 1.2MW double-port charger, 3.75MW of combined DC capacity, with an MCS upgrade taking charge times from about 40 minutes to about 20. Their 4x2 electric tractor units are hauling 42-tonne loads with 267-plus miles of range.

Ashford, this year. BP Pulse is putting a 1MW charger into Ashford International Truckstop, with capacity for up to 20. On the continent, Milence is building 284 MCS bays across 71 locations by 2027 — meaning the European routes your trucks run will electrify whether the UK keeps pace or not.

The money is real too

ZEHID's £200 million is not a press release: about £120 million is already out the door, on course for roughly 300 zero-emission HGVs on UK roads. And on the vehicle side, the plug-in truck grant was extended into the 2026/27 financial year and then sharply uplifted in January — up to £20,000 off a small electric HGV, £60,000 at 12–18 tonnes, £80,000 at 18–26 tonnes, and £120,000 off the heaviest trucks, inside a £318 million green freight package. Six-figure purchase support materially changes fleet replacement maths, and it will not last forever. Grant windows never do.

The catch: your grid connection, not the charger

Here's the part the charger brochures skip. The hardware is now the easy bit. The constraint is the wire into your site.

A typical distribution depot has a grid connection in the hundreds of kVA. One megawatt-class pod can exceed that on its own; a row of them certainly does. Which means depot megawatt charging is not a procurement exercise, it's a grid infrastructure project — DNO applications, possible substation work, sometimes years of lead time. The operators opening hubs this year applied for their connections when MCS was still a slide.

That's the real message of 2026 for anyone running trucks from a fixed site: the trucks can be delivered in months, the grant paperwork in weeks — and the grid connection is the item on the critical path that can take years. Whether your first electric tractor units arrive in 2027 or 2029, the connection work starts now or it isn't ready.

Three things worth knowing before you panic-buy capacity, though. First, most depot duty cycles don't need MCS at every bay — overnight vehicles are perfectly served by cheaper AC or 150kW DC, with megawatt capability reserved for the handful of diagrams that genuinely turn around mid-shift. Second, batteries and smart load management can buffer a modest connection surprisingly far — you size for energy across the shift, not for every bay at peak simultaneously. Third, where the public rapid network is thin — which outside the motorway spine is most places — a depot with spare megawatt capacity becomes an asset other fleets will pay to use.

Three checks to run this month

One: your firm capacity. Dig out your connection agreement and get the actual kVA figure, not folklore. The gap between that number and your electrification plan is your project. If you're on a shared or council-adjacent site, the public procurement frameworks may carry some of the cost.

Two: your duty cycles. Split the fleet into overnight-charged and must-turn-around. The second list is your MCS requirement; it's usually shorter than the board fears, and it changes the capital number by seven figures.

Three: your procurement terms. Megawatt hardware is young and vendors will churn. Anything you buy should run certified open protocols so the site outlives the supplier — being welded to one vendor at 150kW is annoying; at 1.5MW it's a balance-sheet problem.

MCS won't be on every corner by 2028. It doesn't need to be. Twenty-five funded hubs on the freight spine, six-figure truck grants and a published standard are enough to make electric artics the rational replacement choice on a growing share of UK diagrams — and the depots that win that traffic will be the ones that started their grid conversation early.
